KIWANO

Cucumis metuliferus

Kiwano, also known as the African cucumber, is an indeterminate plant, so it is recommended to stake it. It needs well-drained and very fertile soils. It is a nutrient-demanding plant. It does not tolerate cold so it is advisable to sow or transplant it after the frost season. The fruit is about 10-12 cm long by about 6 wide, shaped like a melon, yellow-brown in color and fleshy and wide thorns. It has a great contribution of vitamins (especially C) and high potassium content. Its caloric content is low (few sugars and fats). The fruit must be harvested when it is very ripe (pale yellow).
